TRAIN THE TRAINER PROGRAM

For many years the ICPC has been the leader for training law enforcement and public safety chaplains around the world. We have offered quality education and standards that have been the basis for most law enforcement chaplains’ careers.

As we have grown as an organization we have had to learn, change and adapt to the ever changing needs represented by our chaplains everywhere. We take seriously the evaluations completed by attendees at our training seminars and in listening to the feedback; have sought to make changes. This new program is due in part to this feedback.

Attendees are requiring more from their instructors today. No longer can instructors just tell "war stories" for an hour; allow a class to run itself with student’s personal observations and sharing sessions, or trying to "get by" without knowing an audience or offering practical instruction.

Many people (chaplains included) have great personal knowledge and experience. However, the plain fact is—NOT ALL PEOPLE KNOW HOW TO IMPART THIS INFORMATION TO OTHERS IN AN INTERESTING AND EFFECTIVE MANNER!!

Listen to some of the comments given in evaluations:

  • "Instructor could not be heard--poor language and presentations skills. Presentation was not coherent or logical"
  • "Inform instructors to stick to the material and not themselves"
  • "Presenter was qualified, but didn’t give good information"
  • "A few [presenters] were boring because of their monotone speech or overemphasis on details or "war stories" that were not relevant to the subject"
  • "Some great chaplains seem to rely on past laurels, talk about "self" and what "they" have done rather than updating their materials and speaking about the topic"
  • "More interested in making themselves look good than teaching—very narcissistic!"

Believe it or not, this may be you; but please don’t take offense. The good news is that we can all improve by learning new skills! That is what this course is all about.

PROGRAM

The purpose of this 40-hour train-the-trainer course is to equip and train qualified chaplains to instruct as certified trainers for ICPC.

Ultimately, the final goal is to then utilize their skills at various ICPC conferences and trainings. As more train-the-trainer courses are offered in the future, we eventually will be utilizing only the people who have been through the train-the-trainer course to teach ICPC core courses or by credentialed professionals in related fields.

PREREQUISTITE

A trainer candidate must:

• Must be an ICPC member in good standing

• Be at least an ICPC Senior level trained chaplain. [A person with 5 years experience in chaplaincy that will receive their Senior level within one (1) year may apply but will not be activated until after receiving their Senior certificate]

• Successfully complete the train-the-trainer course. [Course Exemption-applicants certified through a federal or state police officer standards and trainings commission as trainers can file for exemption of this requirement.]

• Fill out and submit the appropriate paperwork

• Submit a current passport photo and digital photo

• Sign the Memorandum of Understanding

• Adhere to professional ethics

• Complete paperwork required by the Destin office

A unique trainer number will be assigned to each person that successfully completes the course. This number will be required when referencing each course/seminar taught by the trainer.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Download the Train-the-Trainer Program and application from the ICPC website:
  2. Complete the application and send the completed, signed application and course fees to the address below along with the following documents:
  3. Signed Memorandum of Underestanding
  4. One (1) Passport Photo and one (1) digital photo in .jpeg/.jpg, tiff. or gif. image
  5. Signed Application
  6. If claiming Course Exemption , please send teaching certificate or verification that you are a certified trainer through a federal or state police officer standards and trainings commission. NOTE: If you have verification of a teaching status sufficient for a course exemption, you DO NOT attend the train-the-trainer course.
  7. Incomplete applications will be returned to the sender unprocessed
  8. Applications received after the cutoff date or that are received after the class is filled, will be returned to the sender.
  9. Those applying for trainer status and who are filing a course exemption may file at any time during the year.

REMINDER: The course fee of $300 is for the course only.

It is the responsibility of each participant to arrange for their own transportation, food and lodging. There are a small number of rooms available at the Doubletree Hotel in Sacramento. You need to let them know your reservervation is for the ICPC event.
